Kilt skating comes to Scotland

Location: Braehead Arena. Kings Inch Road, Renfrew.

For more than a decade, Canadians have been celebrating Scottish culture by taking to the ice in kilts. They call it The Great Canadian Kilt Skate. For much longer than that, Scots have enjoyed playing Canada’s national game. We all call it hockey.

In a series of community-focused skating events, the Glasgow Clan hockey club will collaborate with the Great Canadian Kilt Skate in an international celebration of Scottish heritage and culture, showcasing the bond between Scotland and Canada.

Sunday, February 2 — Kilt Skate Night:

  • Public skating where Clan fans can skate alongside their favourite players.

  • Clan players will don tartan homee jerseys and special sporran shorts.

  • Several Clan players have personal links to Canada will be interviewed.

Public Skate Times:

  • 12:30-13:30

  • 14:00-!5:00

  • 15:30-16:30

Saturday, February 8 — Game Day:

  • The Glasgow Clan hosts the Fyfe Flyers. Puck drops at 7 pm.

  • Before the game, fans will be invited to participate in a public skating session.

  • Public skate participants wearing kilts will be able to skate for free.

  • The national anthem will be performed on the bagpipes.

  • Fans are encouraged to wear Scottish dress: the “Purple Army” goes tartan!

  • Prizes will go to the best-dressed attendees.

This will be a trans-Atlantic experience as several Canadian cities and one American kilt skate community will hold their annual kilt skates to coincide with the Glasgow Clan event.
