South Dublin On Ice Offers Discount for Tartan Kilt Skate

DUBLIN, January 9, 2020.  Ahead of the first-ever Tartan Kilt Skate Dublin, scheduled for Saturday, January 11, the managers of South Dublin On Ice have offered a price discount to “anyone wearing a kilt or tartan who acts any way Canadian.”

Skaters in kilts and tartan, acting Canadian, will pay only €12 (including skate rental). Regular adult admission for the Tallaght Stadium is €15.  Participants are invited on the Facebook Event page and on the South Dublin On Ice page to suggest how to act Canadian.

The tradition of kilt skating to celebrate Scotland’s contribution to Canada began as a series of house parties in honour of the birthday of Canada’s First Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald.  Through the efforts of the Scottish Society of Ottawa, it spread to communities across Canada.  Last year, the first kilt skate was held south of the border in New York City.  This year, the Tartan Kilt Skate Dublin brings the phenomenon across the Atlantic for the first time.

“We’re delighted that South Dublin On Ice is offering a discount to kilted and tartaned skaters,” says Dublin-based Canadian, Don Cummer.  “I’ll be there in my tartan kilt.  I’ll just have to make sure to act Canadian.  Maybe I’ll be very nice to everyone, eh? Or maybe I’ll go into the corners with my elbows up.”

South Dublin On Ice is located at Tallaght Stadium, Whitestown Way, Oldbawn, Dublin 24.  The Tartan Kilt Skate will be held between 8:00 and 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, January 11.  Participants are encouraged to arrive by 7:30 p.m.
